The Great Bacon Debate (and Gameday donuts!)

Photobucket

Bacon. It's fried. It's crispy. It's good. Well, it's not my favorite thing (sorry, lovers of the pig!), but it certainly IS my husband's. He basically sweats bacon grease. We're avid fans of "Man vs. Food" on the Travel Channel, and I completely lost my cap when host Adam Richman visited a donut shop that featured a maple-glazed and bacon-topped donut. Such gooey, salty, sugary goodness. It just felt right. I had to make my own. Would you eat bacon in a dessert? I might just need to host a townhall forum on this topic (Food Network, ya listening?).

I knew that today was the perfect day to create my own original bacon-licious donut. Why?

Well, today just happens to be one of the biggest days of the year in our house - THE FIRST PHILADELPHIA EAGLES FOOTBALL GAME OF THE SEASON! Not only did Penn State (we're alumni) win yesterday, but the Birds start their season today. I can't even count the number of ways that we love the Eagles in our home, but my husband seriously is only operating on 77% capacity during the off-season. He needs his Eagles to function (so, Andy Reid, let's actually win the whole thing this year, okay?). In honor of the start of the season, I whipped up two batches of donuts. Here are the recipes, along with some other stuff, in all of their glory...get your napkins ready, ladies! Donuts and football are both some dirty business!

Just a note-ola: Me and frying? Not such a match made in heaven. To save myself the headache (and because I'm usually wearing a baby when I do these things), I bought two boxes (12 donuts in each) of Entenmann's Soft'ees plain cake donuts. I made my own frostings and toppings and busted it out all Sandra Lee with my donuts already made. Seriously, ladies, they're yummy and not having to sport a grease burn with my Eagles green was wonderful.

Photobucket

The "Bacon Never Has an Off-Season" Donut (maple cream cheese frosted and bacon topped) - Cream together 1 (8 oz) package of softened cream cheese with 1 stick of softened, unsalted butter. Beat in 1 tsp of vanilla extract and 1/4 cup of maple syrup. Gradually beat in 1 cup of powdered sugar. Smooth on top of donuts. Heat, according to package instructions, 1/2 a package of ready-cooked bacon (about 3/4 of a strip to top each donut...the bacon-ness is up to you, though). Crumble and top donuts. YUM!

Photobucket

The "Chocolate Blitz" Donut - In a double boiler (or try it Kelly-style: a glass bowl over a pot boiling with a few inches of water inside), heat 1 bag of Hershey's milk chocolate chips and 1 stick of unsalted butter 'til completely melted, stirring frequently. Dunk donuts into the mixture and remove to a plate to dry. Fancy up with your team's color in sprinkles. Little hands are great for that part!

The hubby also fixed up some yummy grilled chicken before the game started since we have my in-laws over today for the game. Next to football, grilling is Ed's favorite past-time.

Photobucket

A little pineapple on the side, and the spread is ready!

Okay, and before I wrap it up, it's been one super duper rainy week and we decided yesterday to let this cutie pie little face live it up a bit. There are some downsides to living in a construction zone (new houses being built on our street in our development), but why not make limeade (Sonic-style...mmm) when life hands ya limes?

This sweet, clean little gal...

...got to become one messy little lady!

For sale now: Beautiful, new construction townhomes complete with backyard pond

Alice and I couldn't be tempted to join, LOL.

Photobucket

Dontcha just love the big ol' fancy house in the background with my child playing in the mud across this side of the street? We're Real America, folks. God bless our muddy hearts!

Photobucket

Wait, wait, wait! Let me just show off Alice's sweet little fleece Eagles pants before I go! My mom made these for Rose when she was a baby (complete with lace at the bottom). She also had knit ones when she was younger. Aren't they precious?

Photobucket

Okay, half-time's over and my Alice is about to wake up...HAPPY GAMEDAY, GANG! From our family to yours!

Photobucket

Psst...and if you're a football-lovin' mama, too, let me know what team you follow! I won't be mad, even if you're a Redskins, Cowboys or Giants fan!  Love you guys!

  3. Ok, I have to ask- did the bacon taste good on the donut? I mean, I like both, but never, ever considered mixing the two!

I don't really have a favorite team- I know, it's sad. I grew up in WI but I was never a Badger fan. Nor a Packer fan- I'm still bitter that I had a written test in P.E. right after I moved to the state on all the players and plays and stuff a 4th grader just didn't care about and I got a big fat F. It was too much for this over achiever to take and not even Farve could put the team in my good graces.

  5. Ellie - It's sort of scary, isn't it? It's yummy, I promise! I do think that men are wired to enjoy that combo more than women, though, LOL!

Also, chocolate-covered bacon inspired me too. I might have a "Bizarre Foods" with Andrew Zimmern (Travel Channel) edge that I didn't know about, LOL.

  6. Hi Kelly! Thank you so much for stopping by my blog! So sweet of you. We do have Taco Bell near us and it is definitely always good in a pinch. I love the Mexican Pizzas there. :) Maybe I should blog about Taco Bell next week.

The bacon donuts look so yummy. I mean really, how wrong can something get if it has bacon on it. Ha! :)

  7. Kelly, I just read on your blog that you are from PA.??!!! I grew up in Chambersburg, PA. It's about 20 minutes west of Gettysburg. I did my undergraduate and masters at Shippensburg University!!! All of my family still lives in Chambersburg. I am so homesick now. :) I would give anything to move back to PA.

  9. I HAVE to make those donuts when my oldest daughter is home next. There is nothing she loves more than bacon. And she loves donuts. So, that combo would be absolutely delightful for her! And, I'm so glad you didn't fry your own. I don't fry. Ever. And when my husband was still here, I would only fry for him, outside on the deck. I hate the way frying stinks up my house!

My favorite team? I don't really watch the pros since our Atlanta Falcons have always and forever been awful. But college ball? OH YEAH BABY! SEC all the way, but most particularly the University of Georgia Bulldogs! I hang my flag, wear my shirt and earrings and cheer for my team. My kids don't like me very much when I do that.

P.S. UGA won this Saturday. It was awesome.

P.P.S. I hope you have a great week.

In answer to your comment at my blog: I like making jam the most, and find the jam and pizza sauce to be the most practical for me.

I totaly love you blog. My daughter was just looking over my shoulder at your blog, and she asked for bacon donuts for breakfast. I have bacon in fridge, but I only have biscuit mix, so I will put a twist on the recipe.

Hope you have a beautiful week!

:( Man, what a bad game for our side!
But it must of been a great day in your house - except for the whole busted rib for McNabb - that stinks.
The sad thing is - even with his busted rib, he could throw better than Delhomme did today ...argh!
Congrats on a great Eagles win - a great start to the season. (and yes, we fans deserve some credit, right? :) )

  18. Oh, Kelly....just stop it now! Bacon on a doughnut?!?!?! That looks SO delish! I would LIVE off bacon if I could. I have to restrain myself at brunch buffets from taking ALL the bacon. It's really quite ugly.

I remember VIVIDLY one of my best days ever in my life. It involved me and my sister and a huge ravine of mud and water. Awesome day! I know she would totally agree. :o)
